City Limitless - The Podcast Ep. 1 Troy Kotsur
Born and raised in Mesa, AZ, Troy’s roots run deep! Being born into a family of all-hearing people, Troy speaks highly of his family’s signing abilities – especially his father, Leonard, who was the Chief of Police in Mesa. Unfortunately, after a car accident involving a drunk driver, Troy’s father was paralyzed from the neck, down, making communication between the two very difficult. His father and he created their version on Sign Language, using the small range of motion Leonard still had so they could continue to speak. Troy drew inspiration from his father’s story, returning as a keynote speaker and premiering his documentary “To My Father”, the story of his father becoming paralyzed, at the Mesa Film Festival in 2023. In 2022, Troy received multiple Academy Award nominations and became the first ever Deaf male actor to win an Oscar for his supporting role in the film “CODA.”
